Huawei Honor 8 Scores Android 7 Nougat

Huawei today said it will begin rolling out Android 7 Nougat to its Honor 8 handset starting Feb. 10. The update adds features and tweaks performance. To start, the update gives Honor 8 owners the option of selecting the stock Android user interface rather than Huawei’s EMUI. Other changes include the option to use the app drawer, use two apps side-by-side, more fully customize notifications and the Quick Settings menu, set camera priorities, share contact cards via QR codes, switch between profiles quicker, and rearrange the settings list. Huawei says it optimized performance as well, reducing the number of steps needed to complete most tasks, reducing Bluetooth pairing times, and preventing the system from storing certain subsets of user data. Huawei says the rollout will be gradual, though it expects all Honor 8 devices globally to receive the update by the end of the month.

Google Pixel Gains Access to Home Control Functions

Google today made it possible for the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones to control some smart home products through the Google Assistant. Pixel owners can now interact with Belkin Wemo and Honeywell smart home products, for example. Users will need to add each smart home product manually to their Pixel via the app. Once added, people can utter requests such as, “Ok Google, turn the temperature up downstairs” to adjust the thermostat. This functionality requires the latest version of Google Play Services as well as the latest Google app.

Facebook Stops Advertisers Illegally Discriminating by Race

Facebook has updated its advertising policies to ban discrimination based on a number of personal characteristics, including race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or age.

Accompanying the new policies is a section aimed at educating advertisers about the extent to which ad targeting is allowed on the social network, both in terms of Facebook?EU?s own policies and applicable national laws.

Enforcing the rules may be tricky, but Facebook plans to use new technology ?EU?that leverages machine learning?EU? to identify the most egregious offenders — those that ?EU?offer housing, employment or credit opportunities?EU? in a discriminatory manner.

The move follows accusations that the social network offered tools that allow advertisers to break American anti-discrimination laws, through an ad-targeting feature described as ?EU?ethnic affinity?EU? profiling.

First highlighted in March 2016, the affinity targeting was intended to allow advertisers to target messages to specific audiences without getting into the murky ground of racial profiling. Facebook describes the feature as grouping people not by ?EU?their genetic makeup, but their affinity to the cultures they are interested in?EU?. That way, a white Facebook user who has expressed interest in hip-hop music, the TV channel BET, and the the films of Spike Lee might be put in the ?EU?African-American?EU? affinity group.

Although Facebook goes to great lengths to emphasize that the feature, which is still available for advertisers, is not the same as racial profiling, a second wave of negative publicity arrived in October 2016, when ProPublica reported that the affinity targeting could be used to exclude particular groups from advertising for home sales. That is explicitly banned under the Civil Rights Act of 1964, due to America?EU?s long history of segregation.

Twitter Struggles To Turn Headlines into Cash

Twitter’s role as a megaphone for the U.S. president, countless celebrities and businesses hasn’t attracted regular people to the service, not in the way Facebook has, or even Instagram and Snapchat.

The San Francisco company’s latest earnings report and dismal forecast suggest that this is unlikely to change in the near future. CEO Jack Dorsey acknowledged long ago that Twitter needs to do more to grow its user base and convince people why it is useful.

“The whole world is watching Twitter. While we may not be meeting everyone’s growth expectations, there’s one thing that continues to grow and outpace our peers: Twitter’s influence and impact,” Dorsey said in a conference call with analysts on Thursday. “You don’t go a day without hearing about Twitter.”

But that doesn’t amount to much if Twitter can’t translate the influence into boosting its user base, advertising and revenue.

While Dorsey and Twitter have taken major steps recently to address some of users’ biggest concerns, including clamping down on hate speech and abuse, this has yet to make a notable difference in drawing new users. For the final three months of 2016, Twitter averaged 319 million monthly users, up just 4 percent from a year ago. Facebook has about 1.86 billion.

Meanwhile, Twitter has yet to address other issues, including simple ones such as the ability to edit tweets.

“Just like Myspace perhaps Twitter does not what to ‘change the formula’ for fear of losing its unique simple user experience, but the shareholders and CEO Jack Dorsey are running out of time,” Mark Skilton, a professor at Warwick Business School, wrote in an email.

E3 Video-Game Trade Show Will Sell Tickets to Public This Year

E3 is opening up to the public this year, a bid to inject some excitement into the massive video-gaming trade show after some major game publishers pulled out from the show floor.

In a teaser video posted online Wednesday, the Entertainment Software Association trade group said it would make 15,000 tickets available for members of the public to attend this year’s trade show, scheduled for June in Los Angeles.

The tickets, priced at $249, will go on sale at 9 a.m. Monday at the show’s website. The first 1,000 will be sold for $149.

The trade show is the highlight of the video-game industry’s calendar, featuring announcements of new video-game titles and hardware. Attendance has traditionally been limited to the game industry and press, reflecting the show’s roots as a forum for retail buyers to meet with game publishers to determine what to put on store shelves during the holiday season.

But the show has skewed more toward media spectacle recently, with publishers and game-platform owners like Microsoft’s Xbox and Sony’s PlayStation hosting giant events during the weeklong conference, which is held at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Some publishers have opted to leave the show floor entirely, avoiding the cost of a booth and E3’s controls. Electronic Arts, the maker of the “Madden NFL” and “Battlefield” franchises, last year set up its own bit of rival Los Angeles programming outside the walls of E3, called “EA Play.” Activision, maker of the world-beating “Call of Duty” games, also didn’t have its own booth last year.

E3 has experimented with tweaking the makeup of its show in recent years, adding a few thousand video-game internet streaming celebrities and other “influencers.” The show last year also included a fan-focused event held near EA Play, though attendees to that event couldn’t walk the show floor itself.

Verizon, T-Mobile Tie for Best Network, OpenSignal Report Finds

Across the U.S., Verizon and T-Mobile are practically neck and neck in terms of mobile network speeds and performance, according to the latest findings from OpenSignal’s crowdsourced monitoring.

OpenSignal also found that 4G speeds continue to rise, with typical speeds in many cities surpassing the national average. Of 36 cities the company studied from October through December, 25 now have one or more mobile service providers that deliver average LTE speeds faster than 20 Mbps (megabits per second).

The city with the fastest 4G speeds in the new study is Detroit, where both Verizon and T-Mobile average LTE download speeds of more than 25 Mbps. Minneapolis and Chicago also have at least one operator with average 4G speeds of 25 Mbps or greater. OpenSignal’s results are based on some 4.6 billion crowdsourced datapoints measured through its mobile app, which is being used by nearly 170,000 people across the U.S.

Verizon Retains Top 4G Availability — for Now

Compared to the results in its previous “State of Mobile Networks” report, released in August, OpenSignal found that Verizon had gained some ground over T-Mobile in its 4G speed rankings late last year.

“Verizon has clearly taken exception to T-Mobile’s recent attempts to steal the network spotlight,” the new report noted. “Verizon is fighting back with 4G upgrades of its own, and as our latest results in the U.S. show it’s doing so quite effectively. The two are again tied in network speeds in our tests, but T-Mobile continues to chip away at Verizon’s vaunted lead in 4G availability.”

Tests showed that Verizon currently offers the highest 4G availability rates, with those speeds available 88.2 percent of the time. T-Mobile, however, is only two percentage points behind, “the closest we’ve seen that difference,” OpenSignal said.

Verizon Wireless Offering Same-Day Screen Repairs

Verizon Wireless today said customers who subscribe to its Total Mobile Protection plan can take advantage of same-day screen repairs at some 220 Verizon Stores across 34 states. Many of the company’s most popular phones are eligible for same-day repairs, including the Apple iPhone SE, 5c, 5s, 6, 6 Plus, 6s, and 6s Plus; Samsung Galaxy S5, S6, S7, Note 4, and 5; and the Motorola Droid Turbo and Droid Maxx. Verizon says it will add more devices to this list over time. Customers who don’t live near one of the 220 stores may be eligible for same-day repairs completed by an in-home mobile technician. The Total Mobile Protection plan costs $11 per month for smartphones and $9 per month for tablets/feature phones. Families can protect multiple lines: the first three lines are $11 each, but lines 4-10 can be added at no additional charge. Cracked screen repairs require a $79 deductible, but Verizon upped the number of yearly claims from two to three per line. All lines can take advantage of Verizon’s Tech Coach for personal/technical assistance. The new Verizon Wireless Total Mobile Protection plan is available beginning today.

LG and Google team up on improved smartwatches

If you’re into your smartwatches and use an Android device, you’ll have noticed the lack of updates of both hardware and software recently. LG are planning to change all that with two new smartwatches, both running the new Wear 2.0 update.

They were leaked by Evan Blass but we now have official confirmation from LG directly. The LG Watch Sport and LG Watch Style will both run Android Wear 2.0 and are both powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor. You’ll also get a better finger-free interface as the Google Assistant comes built-in. It’ll allow you to set reminders, ask for directions and more – just say “OK Google” to get started.

The LG Watch Sport supports Android Pay via NFC, so you can slap your wrist on the payment terminals instead of your smartphone. Meanwhile, both watches have a better UI and enhanced messaged and fitness features via Google Fit.

Both watches have a rotating side button to navigate around the interface – scroll through the app menu, notifications or messages by rotating it.

The LG Watch Sport is designed for everyone who “enjoys dynamic, athletic lifestyles” and inside you’ll find a SIM with 4G connectivity. No real need for a smartphone then, as there’s built-in GPS and it can runs apps itself. Specs include a 1.38″ circular P-OLED display and it’s made from 316L grade stainless steel. It also has a thermoplastic polyurethane band and a photoplethsmogram (PPG) sensor to track your heart rate. It’s water and dust proof.

The smaller LG Watch Style is designed “for urbanites” and comes in either silver, titanium and rose gold. You can snap bands onto it and it’s waterproof too.

Both of these will be on show at Mobile World Congress, but if you’re in the USA you can buy one tomorrow – February 10th. Key markets in Europe and Asia will see availability via the Google Store “later this month”.
