The Honor Magic 2. Please let this come to Europe

The Honor Magic 2. Please let this come to Europe

In February 2017, I stumbled across the original Honor Magic at Mobile World Congress. I was really taken with the thing. It felt like a glossy pebble – the design was just stunning. Like nothing else on the market. Trouble is, it wasn’t destined for Europe, so unless you did some importing you wouldn’t find it in many pockets over here.

The Honor Magic 2. Please let this come to Europe

Now, at IFA 2018, the successor has been launched. It’s been a bit of a tease really, and it feels like it’s a few months away yet, but the Magic 2 has a full-screen display and a sliding mechanism to reveal the front-facing camera and other sensors. Honor call this “Magic Slide” and they’ve created it so that you get a proper full view display without a notch. Hmm… I’ve seen that somewhere before but I can’t remember as I type. Let me know in the comments if you remember! 🙂

Edit – Ah yes, it was the Oppo Find X !

The Honor Magic 2. Please let this come to Europe

George Zhao, President of Honor, was keen to again mention the AI capabilities to us…

The launch of Honor Magic two years ago introduced the concept of the AI smartphone to consumers. The first-generation Honor Magic was an era-defining smartphone that transformed the industry. In addition to AI-features that make the phone truly smart, Honor Magic’s ground-breaking all-curved panel design and powerful 40W charging support have reshaped smartphone design and become a benchmark for all smartphones. The developments of these futuristic flagship devices are closely followed by the smartphone and AI industry, and now the Honor Magic 2 has arrived.

The Honor Magic 2 is the first Honor smartphone powered by the Kirin 980 processor. The Kirin CPU’s are made by Huawei subsidiary HiSilicon, and this will set a world record due to the 7-nanometer production. Chips are becoming more powerful and reduce power consumption. The 980 has four Cortex-A76 cores plus four smaller Cortex-A55 cores operating at up to 2.8 GHz.

What else do we know about the Magic 2? Well, not a great deal as yet. I’m personally hammering the PR team to try and get some prices, availability and specs, so I’ll let you know shortly. I’m also on the hunt for some closer pictures!

IFA2018 – Gamers rejoice, it’s the Honor Play

IFA2018 Gamers rejoice, its the Honor Play
Let’s go with the price on this one first shall we? It’s £279.99. Boom. That’s probably enough to get you buying it already. A cheap phone for gamers? Can there be such a thing? Well, yes there can. Go buy one. Go get one right now on HiHonor.com.

Honor tell us…

The Honor Play offers young people what they really want from their smartphone, an immersive non-stop gaming and entertainment experience. Until now, however, this experience has been plagued by space and capacity problems, thermal efficiency and battery consumption issues because of the popularity of tactical tournament games, and because AR, VR and HDR rendering rely on fast graphic processing power. Working with PUBG MOBILE, which is one of the most popular tactical tournament games, Honor took every effort to not only solve these performance problems but develop the first-ever gamer-oriented phone, the Honor Play – a “Game On” moment for the industry.

IFA2018 Gamers rejoice, its the Honor Play

Yes, a notch.

I say again. Just £279.99. They’ve made it possible with Honor’s new GPU Turbo. This dramatically increases the graphics processing and computing efficiency. It means you get an average frame rate of 39.46 on PUBG MOBILE. The jitter rate has been reduced to 0.21% and the battery will cope with 4.5 hours of solid gameplay.

IFA2018 Gamers rejoice, its the Honor Play

The Honor Play has also added AI to the phone for a “4D gaming experience” and camera cleverness. In your games, there’s 3D audio effects and AI vibration, so it’ll vibrate differently depending on the direction of approaching enemies or gunfire. They’ve also added 3D surround sound from Histen so that you’re fully immersed in the game.

As I just touched on, the AI brains help with photographs too. There’s motion detection and intelligent screen recognition.

Specs? Well there’s a 6.3″ screen (1080 x 2340 pixels, 409 ppi), a healthy 3650mAh battery, the Kirin 970 chipset (octa-core – 4 2.4 GHz and 4 1.8 GHz), plus 4GB RAM, 64GB on-board storage and a microSD slot, or you can whack 2 SIMs in. You get all the usual extras too – dual-band WiFi, GPS, 3.5mm audio port (yay!) and NFC plus a fingerprint sensor and Bluetooth 4.2. The Honor Play delivers the phenomenally fast mobile gaming and entertainment experiences mobile gamers have been waiting for whilst Honor Magic 2 is the brand’s new flagship device and packs REAL Full View Display, AI Magic Slide, Kirin 980 and more amazing features into one smartphone

Thursday, August 30, 2018 – Honor launched the Honor Play today, the first of a game changing new product series to deliver the revolutionary fast gaming and entertainment experience the global gaming industry has been waiting for. Meanwhile, at the Honor Play launch event held on the eve of IFA in Germany, Mr. George Zhao, President of Honor, unexpectedly unveiled the Honor Magic 2, the brand’s new flagship smartphone.

The Honor Play is a performance beast with the groundbreaking graphics processing technology GPU Turbo to meet young gamers’ demands for “lightning fast” graphics processing capability and extended battery life. Building on the success of the first-generation Honor Magic launched in 2016, the Honor Magic 2 boasts an intelligent Magic Slide feature, which gives users a real full view display and instantly activates the world of AI with one sliding motion. The device will also be the first Honor smartphone powered by the Kirin 980 processor

HONOR PLAY

Completing the Honor portfolio strategy, the Honor Play offers young people what they really want from their smartphone, an immersive non-stop gaming and entertainment experience. Until now, however, this experience has been plagued by space and capacity problems, thermal efficiency and battery consumption issues because of the popularity of tactical tournament games, and because AR, VR and HDR rendering rely on fast graphic processing power. Working with PUBG MOBILE, which is one of the most popular tactical tournament games, Honor took every effort to not only solve these performance problems but develop the first-ever gamer-oriented phone, the Honor Play – a “Game On” moment for the industry because it will redefine the mobile gaming user experience at an affordable price point of £279.99.

The Honor Play offers an unprecedented gaming performance and a 24/7 “Always On” entertainment experience. This launch brings two ground-breaking and industry leading smartphone technologies to gamers and casual users. The first is Honor’s new GPU Turbo, which dramatically increases the graphics processing and computing efficiency, and the other is Honor’s advanced AI technology, which revolutionises the smartphone camera function.

The GPU Turbo is an innovative hardware-software integration solution that leaves Honor’s competitors trailing in the dust. As the global strategic partner of PUBG MOBILE, Honor Play has dramatically increased the graphics processing and boosted the average frame rate to 39.46[1] on PUBG MOBILE. The jitter rate has been reduced to 0.21%[2], more than a full percentage point below Honor’s key rivals, and the battery life has a 30-minute lead over other flagship devices with 4.5 hours of solid gameplay.

The Honor Play in-game experience has been AI-enabled for total immersion. The 4D gaming experience includes 3D audio effects and AI vibration customised for the most popular mobile games and matched to in-game objects and scenarios. AI 4D Smart Shock can be enabled for 30 different scenario vibrations,[3] according to the direction of approaching enemies or gunfire. This is complemented by the 3D surround sound by Histen 3D audio technology, an ultra-wide 3D sound field that immerses the player in a cinematic audio experience.

The Honor Play is one of the smartest mid-range phones on the market. With AI motion detection and intelligent recognition, snapshots using the 16MP front camera are now easier than ever before. Casual users will experience just as much fun from this device as gamers, thanks to the huge 3,750 mAh battery which allows for heavy gaming and entertainment use, equaling more than 15 hours of video streaming and 95 hours for music playback, even with the 6.3-inch Honor FullView FHD+ display. A range of smart features are enabled by the Kirin 970 NPU chipset which, together with EMUI 8.2, unleashes a truly AI-mazing processing power.

The slim and subtle unibody metal design comes in a range of colors for all gamers: Midnight Black, Navy Blue, and a special Player Edition patterned in red and black. The design retains the body of a typical 5.5-inch screen device to ensure it fits comfortably in your hand and packs a 19.5:9 bezel-less display.

The Honor Play will be available at £279.99 for purchase at Carphone Warehouse, Argos, Amazon, John Lewis, Very, AO, HiHonor from August 30 at 14:00 BST in the UK.

“The Honor Play is a new moment for the global gaming industry. Honor will be the first to offer a phenomenally fun mobile gaming and entertainment experience,” said George Zhao, President of Honor. “But we don’t stop at making a good product, we are creating the future of mobile gaming with young people worldwide. The Honor Play is our response to their demand for a fast, smooth gaming performance and entertainment experience.”

Sharing the same passion for speed and performance, Honor, the smartphone e-brand is working with Audi to celebrate the arrival of Honor Play. As the official partner of Audi Sports R8 LMS Cup, with the Audi R8, the Honor Play combines sleek design and blistering performance. Both Audi R8 and Honor Play deliver speed that surpass the limits of the imagination.

HONOR MAGIC 2

“The launch of Honor Magic two years ago introduced the concept of the AI smartphone to consumers”, noted Mr. George Zhao, President of Honor. “The first-generation Honor Magic was an era-defining smartphone that transformed the industry. In addition to AI-features that make the phone truly smart, Honor Magic’s ground-breaking all-curved panel design and powerful 40W charging support have reshaped smartphone design and become a benchmark for all smartphones. The developments of these futuristic flagship devices are closely followed by the smartphone and AI industry, and now the Honor Magic 2 has arrived.”

With intense competition across global markets, many smartphone brands are striving to enhance the user experience by offering a full view display. However, most, if not all, phones with this new feature have sacrificed user friendliness and the photography experience. The designs focus solely on screen layout and presentation improvements, failing to bring true value to users.

In contrast, the intelligent Magic Slide feature of the Honor Magic 2 is designed to achieve full view display without compromising other practical functions. The hidden-from-view front camera enables a nearly 100% screen-to-body ratio, overcoming the challenge of incorporating a camera in a notchless design. It delivers a superior visual experience with great convenience and practicality to redefine the value of a full-screen smartphone.

By sliding the top screen, users can instantly activate all AI features. This innovation in design is based on ergonomic science. In addition to its revolutionary design, the Honor Magic 2 is the first Honor smartphone powered by the Kirin 980 processor, unlocking the phone’s groundbreaking AI-performance and again raising the bar in smartphone performance and user experience.

Moreover, the Honor Magic 2 comes with the 40W Magic Charge for maximum charging power. To further ensure safety, 15 layers of protection are also embedded in the smartphone. The phone can automatically identify the battery, cable and charger and only when all of the three parts are identified as safe will the Super Charger start.

Debuting in Germany, the Honor Magic 2 will be a key flagship that is showcased at the world-class IFA exhibition to reaffirm the company’s confidence in this latest model. In the first half of 2018, Honor recorded a remarkable 150% increase year-on-year in international sales volume outside of China. Following the recent launch of Honor 10 and Honor Play, the Honor Magic 2 will continue to propel Honor forward in its goal to become a top-five smartphone brand within three years.

BlackBerry KEY2 LE Sheds Metal Frame, Adds a Splash of Color

TCL today announced the BlackBerry KEY2 LE, a mass-market smartphone with a keyboard. The phone is a scaled back variant of the KEY2 with a new exterior. Gone is the rigid metal build and in its place is a polycarbonate frame with a soft-touch material on the rear surface. The KEY2 LE comes in three color combos: slate, champagne, and atomic red. The latter two have contrasting shades to give them more personality. The LE is less buttoned-down than the standard KEY2. The screen is the same size and resolution (4.5 inches, full HD) as the original. One area where TCL moved to cut costs was the keyboard. The keys are the same shape as those on the pricier KEY2, but the keyboard loses capacitive touch support. The phone is powered by a Qualcomm 636 processor with 4 GB of RAM and 32 or 64 GB of storage. A dual-camera system graces the rear of the phone and a selfie camera is on front. The main shooter is a 13-megapixel job at f/2.2 and the secondary sensor is a 5-megapixel job at f/2.4. Other hardware features include 3.5mm headphone jack, USB-C, and the dedicated speed key on the keyboard. The phone has a 3,000mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0. Of note, TCL says the KEY2 LE will be compatible with more networks. It will be able to operate on Verizon’s network as an LTE-only phone. It is also compatible with AT&T and T-Mobile. TCL has lined up a wide number of retail and carrier distribution points for the phone, which goes on sale for $399 / 32 GB and $449 / 64 GB at the end of September.

Sony Xperia XZ3 goes official at IFA2018

Sony Xperia XZ3 goes official at IFA2018
It only seems a few minutes since we reviewed the XZ2 but now, here it is, the Xperia XZ3. It might “just” look like a small upgrade, but there’s actually a lot more to appreciate about this one.

Specs include a 6″ 2880 x 1440 screen – that’s a smidge bigger than the one on the XZ2. However, this is OLED screen on a phone from Sony. It’s been developed alongside the Bravia TV guys, so it’s going to be good. Gorilla Glass 5 protects it and the phone has an IP68 protection against water and dust.

They’ve also borrowed / taken inspiration from HTC with a “Side Sense”. HTC call theirs “Edge Sense”. Here tapping the side of the phone will bring up a new contextual menu filled with apps. This uses some clever AI trickery to open based apps based on predictions for what you’ll be doing next. They’ve also included a Smart Launch feature which knows when you are holding the phone up horizontally (which, of course, is the proper way to take a photo) and automatically fires up the camera app.

What the phone doesn’t have is a notch. There’s also no 3.5mm headphone jack.

Specs include a 3,330mAh battery (again, a tad bigger than the XZ2), a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 CPU, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, NFC, dual-band WiFi, DLNA and a fingerprint scanner on the back.

Sony Xperia XZ3 goes official at IFA2018

Cameras? Well, you get a single 19MP Exmor RS MotionEye camera on the rear. This has autofocus that can shoot high dynamic range video in 4K and slow-motion video in 1080p. Up the front there’s a 13 megapixel unit, again this is an improvement on the 5 megapixel unit before. You also get an upgraded S-Force speaker. This gives a 20 percent louder volume than the previous model.

More in the promotional video below..

The Xperia XZ3 will be available in selected markets globally from end of September 2018 and will be among the first devices to ship with the latest Android 9 Pie. Pre-order will be available from 31st August- 5th October and you can get it in Black, White Silver, Forest Green and Bordeaux Red.

In the UK, you’ll get a digital copy of Activision’s new Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 on release day (12th October), if you pre-order. The XZ3 will cost £699 SIM-free. and will be available from a range of operators and retailers at launch.

Phil Elford, Trading Manager for Mobile Tech at Argos, tells us..

The launch of the new Sony XZ3 is really going to shake things up in the smartphone market this year. It will be interesting to see how the new handset fares against the likes of the Huawei P20 Pro and the Samsung S9. We think customers will particularly love the new “Smart launch” with AI that instantly prepares camera when users hold their phone up in landscape mode for seamless photography.

A seamless design and intuitive interface

The curved 3D glass on the front and back blend together seamlessly to create a sleek and elegant borderless design, generating beautiful reflections and ambient colours from all angles. The XZ3 sits comfortably in the hand, courtesy of an extended 18:9 screen framed around a near bezel-less body.

The XZ3’s slim 3mm aluminium metal frame does not compromise looks for durability, together with Corning® Gorilla® Glass 5 and IP65/68 certified water resistance[i]. And there is a choice of four beautiful colours[ii] in a stunning finish to reflect your individual style: Black, White Silver, Forest Green, and Bordeaux Red.

XZ3 also introduces a new user-friendly interface. Side sense uses AI to provide easy and convenient access to your favourite apps with just a double-tap anywhere on either side of your XZ3. Side sense intuitively knows what apps you want to access when to provide a seamless user experience.

Advanced Motion Eye™ camera and AI in Xperia

XZ3 features new Smart launch with AI that instantly prepares your camera when you hold your phone up in landscape mode, ensuring you never miss a moment. Smart launch, together with existing features with AI including Superior Auto, Predictive Capture, Predictive Autofocus and Smile shutter, ensure the XZ3 camera gives you the best chance for a great shot. And of course, only Sony’s Motion Eye™ camera offers 4K HDR Movie recording for pro-quality filming and Full HD 960fps Super slow motion for dramatic videos.

Complementing the 19MP main camera is a best-in-class 13MP front camera that lets you capture beautiful and improved portrait selfies with beauty and bokeh effects for creative shots. In addition, advanced 3D Creator now lets users add facial expressions to their scans, taken with either the front or main camera, making them even more lifelike.

Powerful performance

Powered by the cutting-edge Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 845 Mobile Platform, the XZ3 gives users the world’s fastest maximum connection speeds at 1.2Gbps. In addition, your immersive experience is set to last all day, thanks to several useful battery features such as Smart Stamina, STAMINA mode, plus Battery Care[iii] and Qnovo Adaptive Charging technology to help the battery stay healthy to give you a longer battery lifespan.

The phone offers a 6.2-inch full HD+ (2,248 x 1,080) AMOLED screen with what ZTE calls Axon Vision. Axon Vision uses AI to change the screen’s settings in real time to ensure the best color and brightness given the environment. The screen relies on an independent display processing chip with MEMC (motion estimation, motion compensation) technology, which can boost 24/30fps video to 60fps for smoother playback. Last, the display supports HDR10 video playback. A Snapdragon 845 provides the brains of the operation and it is aided by 6 GB of RAM, with 128 GB of internal storage. The dual-camera configuration relies on the 845’s AI capabilities to introduce new features. The main camera has a 12-megapixel sensor at f/1.75 with optical image stabilization, autofocus, and dual photo diode. The secondary camera has a 20-megapixel sensor and a 130-degree wide angle of view. The front camera has a 20-megapixel fixed-focus camera with face detection. The AI features include intelligent motion tracking for constant focus, smart portraiture, and better slow motion. The phone has a 4,000mAh battery that ZTE says is optimized via constant AI-based evaluation. It will proactively shut down background apps that are draining power. The battery supports rapid charging and Qi-based wireless charging. A fingerprint sensor is located on the rear and the phone is IP68 certified for protection from water/dust. Radios include NFC, dual-band 2x MIMO WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, and LTE. Last of the major features are stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos for clear, loud sound. The phone ships with Android 8.1 Oreo. Pricing is expected to be in the neighborhood of $750. ZTE says the device is chiefly intended for overseas markets.
