#MWC18 Huawei push their AI tech further …. into a car!!

We all know that the dawn of self-driving cars is rapidly approaching, Tesla is pushing the boundaries every day. I have driven the new Nissan Leaf with Pro-Pilot and my standard battlecruiser (aka VW Passat Estate) has got the basics of it in the form of auto cruise control. More and more cars are getting these bits of safety tech built in and they all have one thing in common – serious computing power.

#MWC18 Huawei push their AI tech further .... into a car!!

Now I am guessing you are wondering how in the heck this relates to phones and why I am writing about this on Coolsmartphone – a website for phones! Don’t worry the two things are related. The computers that control these self-driving systems have to be intelligent.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is something we are going to be seeing a lot more of on our phones. They’re now trying to determine how best to help us with our daily lives. I have actually been using an AI supported phone for the last few months and I have, for the most part, been very impressed. I am of course talking about the Huawei Mate 10 Pro. It’s scene recognition mode is stunning and really does help when capturing photos – it takes a lot of the hard work out of getting things set up correctly. I also used it briefly in the stupendously cheap Honor 10 View.

Up until now, these have been the only two devices that support the NPU AI engine that Huawei has created (well, that and the other variants of the Mate 10) – the Kirin 970.

Clearly those guys at Huawei R & D have had a bit too much fun in the past month. They’ve now gone and added this chip into a Porsche Panamera!!

The project name is cool in itself – Roadreader.

Okay, so let me explain a bit more. They haven’t actually replaced the ECU chip with a Kirin 970. Instead they have added a Mate 10 Pro into the car with a whole load of other very techy kit such as robotics and a forward facing video camera in that you’ll see in the photos.

Have a look at this infographic to get a better idea of what they have actually done.

#MWC18 Huawei push their AI tech further .... into a car!!

Here is the Huawei video which shows the concept off.

We actually manager to get to see this in action as we sat in the car whilst it took control and drove us around upcoming obstacles. These were learnt by the Huawei AI tech and then we told the car how to react, depending on which obstacle it saw.

#MWC18 Huawei push their AI tech further .... into a car!!

Here are some of the shots of the cars exterior on a snowy spring day in Barcelona!

Now, some of may be thinking that there is something different from the Huawei video above to what we saw and you would be right. It isn’t exactly a subtle modification that has been made as they have added a honking great big video camera onto the roof of the car! That was the only thing that was in the roof box as can be seen in this photo.

#MWC18 Huawei push their AI tech further .... into a car!!

RoadReader Video camera

The purpose of this camera is too feed the video into the Mate 10Pro which is where the actual computation goes on with regard to image recognition, this is all processed by the Kirin 970 CPU and it’s associated NPU. The NPU is capable of processing 30 images per second in real time. The phone will then send the result of the image recognition to an app which will then allow for the robotics in the car to take the appropriate action. In the back of the car, there is a lot of kit to allow the control of the car to be done via the phone.

#MWC18 Huawei push their AI tech further .... into a car!!

So what does this look and feel like for real, well Leigh very bravely stepped up into the hot seat to have a ride in the car and was gracious enough to film it along with me getting some outside footage.

I think Leigh summed the experience up very nicely at the end of the video there, it is very cool indeed.

Here are a few more shots of the inside of the car and the UI of the App.

Huawei has stated that this is not something they are actively pursuing and this was really developed a showcase for the world to really see what the NPU on the Kirin 970 and Huawei Mate 10 Pro can do. That being said if this was something that they wanted to develop further the possibilities are endless.

All this from 5 weeks work what could be done in 5 months, or 5 years…..

    #MWC18 – Vodafone announce 4G coverage… on the MOON

Yes, the moon. The actual moon. Methinks they’re going to need a bigger coverage map.

#MWC18 Vodafone announce 4G coverage... on the MOON

They’ll be using “Ultra Compact Network” kit, the lightest ever developed. It weighs less than a bag of sugar.

In a partnership with Nokia, the Vodafone 4G network will enable the first live-streaming of HD video from the Moon’s surface to a global audience. It’ll be happening next year, 50 years since the first NASA astronauts set foot on the surface.

A Berlin company called in PTScientists is working with Vodafone and Audi to launch a private landing on the Moon via a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

Yes Audi. They’re sending these Audi Quattro “rovers” up there, and they’ll communicate via 4G to a base station, sending HD video and scientific data.

#MWC18 Vodafone announce 4G coverage... on the MOON

Why use a 4G network? Well, the guys on the stand here tell us that it’s far more efficient than analogue radio. Less power is used when sending the data.

Now yes, this is all rather fantastic, we can’t argue with that, but we do think that some Vodafone customer service staff will be hearing this fired at them by those unable to get coverage in certain parts of the UK etc..

  • #MWC18 – A look at that NOA N10 iPhone X lookalike

#MWC18 A look at that NOA N10 iPhone X lookalike

No prizes for guessing what this handset reminds you of design-wise. It is, to be honest, the second handset with a “notch” that I saw in the very same hall, and some manufacturers aren’t afraid if taking “design ideas” from Apple.

#MWC18 A look at that NOA N10 iPhone X lookalike

On the NOA stand it was the N10 that we wanted to take a look at. It runs a Mediatek MT6763 octa-core 2.3GHz CPU with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. That screen is a massive 6.18″ Full 18:9 HD+ unit at 1080 x 2160. It’s dual SIM, runs Android 8.0 and has two 16 megapixel cameras with the IMX499 sensor at the back with one at the front. There’s a 3600 mAh battery, type-C USB charging and has the usual WiFi , Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and 4G connectivity. It also has the DTS sound system.

#MWC18 A look at that NOA N10 iPhone X lookalike

On display also was the NOA N1 and NOA N7, but we wanted to get a proper hands-on with the NOA N10. Sadly it was in a glass box and they didn’t want to move it or let us have a closer look. Indeed, as we peered through the glass more closely it became apparent that this was a bit of a test unit, with glue and what looked like tape holding it together. The final model will have a ceramic case for a more premium feel.

#MWC18 A look at that NOA N10 iPhone X lookalike

Still, it does look rather swish. The staff on the stand aren’t afraid of drawing parallels with the iPhone X either.

Just like the iPhone X, see?

Yes, I can definitely see that. They also tell us that the dual rear cameras can create photos of “up to 80 megapixels” thanks to the Sony sensor and oversampling tech.

#MWC18 A look at that NOA N10 iPhone X lookalike

The only thing I was a bit concerned with was the firm belief that the storage could only be increased to an overall total of 128GB with a microSD card. Does it really only support a 64GB microSD card then?

Head to the NOA website for more info. You should be able to buy it soon from their website with free delivery to EU countries.

    Grumble grumble, Brexit, Grumble, Grumble.

  • Democrat Senators Move Forward with Bid to Reinstate Net Neutrality

With the support of 50 Senators, Democrats are advancing a bill to bring back the rules governing net neutrality that were cut by the Republican-led FCC. The FCC voted to repeal net neutrality in December and the rules reached the Federal Registry earlier this month. The relaxed regs will go into effect April 23. The FCC order reclassifies broadband internet as an information service, rather than a utility, and would erase the bright line rules that prohibit broadband companies from blocking or throttling service. The idea behind the Democratic Senators’ push is to put the fate of net neutrality into Congress’ hands, rather than those of the FCC. With 50 Senators on board, the Republicans would need Vice President Mike Pence to break a tie in a vote. Should the Democratic Senators succeed in passing their bill, it would likely die in the House where Republicans have a clear majority.

#MWC18 – Come on PanzerGlass, give it a PROPER whack!

#MWC18 Come on PanzerGlass, give it a PROPER whack!
On Monday we saw the guys from PanzerGlass hammering their own screen protectors to prove how well they protect your phone. Now, truth is that they do break sometimes, and they’re designed to do that if there’s a really, really hard impact. After all, it’s better to have a broken screen protector than a broken screen, right?

So, we got chatting with the demo guys on the stand and gently encouraged them to actually try and break the thing. Go on, give it a PROPER WHACK!

The result was pretty encouraging. Despite some properly hefty hits, the protective glass just refused to break.

The guy had to stop in the end because he admitted that if he hit the thing any harder, he’d probably damage the actual chassis of the handset.

Head to their website for more info.

  • Hands On with the Gemini Keyboard Phone

Planet Computers is on a mission to bring back that very specific type of PDA that tried to put a proper QWERTY keyboard in your pocket. No, not a thumb-board like your phone, more like a shrunken laptop. If you remember those old Psion devices, you know exactly what they’re going for. This device is aimed at writers, coders, and anyone else who types for a living (and needs to be able to do a lot of it on the go.) The Gemini launched on Indiegogo, and is finally shipping. It’s a totally unique device. We took it for a quick spin.

#MWC2018 ZTE Axon M hands on demo

#MWC2018 ZTE Axon M hands on demoIt has been a while since we have seen an Android phone that is innovative, it is about time that someone dares to be different. Well ZTE has stepped up to the plate in the form of the ZTE Axon M which was being shown here at #MWC2018. We just had to jump at the opportunity to get some hands-on time with it.

Here is a bit of footage from the ZTE booth showing what the phone brings to the market.

Essentially the phone is a phone of two halves, with a foldable central hinge this allows for the phone to be used either flat like a tablet or folded with either the screen being visible on the front or with screen mirror mode allowing for the screen to also be displayed on the back!

#MWC2018 ZTE Axon M hands on demo

There are few other modes that the phone will work in but the one that is most intriguing to me is the folded out mode. this allows for you to have the top screen taken up by your content with the bottom screen being used for a keyboard. This gives you back the screen real estate that you loose on a traditional phone.

#MWC2018 ZTE Axon M hands on demo

Here are few more reasons you may be interested in this device

Side by side apps. While there are a number of phones that allow you to run two apps at once, the experience on a traditional phone is less than ideal due to the fact that both apps end up being pretty small when split on a single display. With the Axon M, you can actually run two full-screen apps. Imagine researching on Chrome while composing a Google doc, watching a YouTube video while looking something else up entirely.. and the list goes on.
A tablet in your pocket. The Axon M is a phone when it needs to be, but when you flip over the hinge it transforms into a tablet. This means you can extend any app on both displays, even apps that weren’t officially designed with this functionality.

#MWC2018 ZTE Axon M hands on demo

Watching with friends is easier than ever. With the Axon M you’ll be able to watch the video, while your friend watches on the other side. This is also great for kids in the car, or anytime you want to show others what’s going on.

Here is the list of specs that make this phone tick

    OS Android 7.1.2 Nougat
    Screen Size (Resolution) Dual 5.2 inch (1920 x 1080)
    CPU Qualcomm Snapdragon 821
    RAM 4GB
    Storage 64GB
microSD Slot? Yes, expandable up to 256GB
    Front/Rear Camera 20-MP, f/1.8
    Battery Life (Hrs:Mins) 8:58
    Water Resistance No
    Size 15.1 x 7.2 x 1.2 cm
    Weight 230 grams

#MWC2018 ZTE Axon M hands on demo

So the specs are not all that bad. I particularly liked the at the camera can be utilized both for the front screen where it is located and also the rear screen.

What we do not know yet is whether this will ever reach the UK officially. We now that is rolling out o some regions in Europe, however, we cannot find out if it will reach us in the UK. Rest assured that if we are able to find out we will bring the news to you.

  • Google's Flutter Toolkit Lets Devs Create Android and iOS UIs

Google today made the first beta release of Flutter available to developers. Flutter is a set of tools that can help developers create user interface designs for Android and iOS. Google says Flutter is quick and easy to use, and can be utilized by experienced and novice developers alike. It includes frameworks for windows, widgets, animations, and image libraries. It includes a GPU-accelerated renderer and native ARM code runtime. It supports accessibility features, right-to-left text, localization, and internationalization. On the iPhone X and iOS 11, it support inline video, additional image formats, and background processes. Google says developers who’ve been testing the alpha release since last year can switch to the beta channel via Android Studio. The end result, hopes Google, will be better looking and better functioning mobile apps that developers can create once for both Android and iOS.
