HP recall yet more laptop batteries

Laptop manufacture HP has issued a further recall of laptop batteries. This comes after the company recalled 50,000 batteries, and that came in the wake of a 101,000 battery recall during the previous year. This time it’s because of concerns over “fire and burn hazards.”

The company had “received eight new reports of battery packs in the US overheating, melting, or charring, including one report of minor injury and two reports of property damage totaling $1,100.” As such, it’s expanding last year’s recall to about 78,500 batteries.

The affected units were “shipped in notebook computers and mobile workstations sold from December 2015 through April 2018” and they were sold separately between December 2015 and December 2018.

Many of these batteries are internal and not visible when looking at the laptop. If you want to check your battery, go to the HP Battery recall website at www.hp.com/go/batteryprogram2018 and follow the instructions to validate your battery. If the validation process shows that your battery is affected, cease use of the battery immediately. HP will provide replacement battery services for each verified, battery, at no cost.

Note: Batteries affected by this recall should immediately be put into ‘Battery Safe Mode’. You may continue to use your notebook on ‘Battery Safety Mode’, by connecting the notebook to an HP power adaptor.
