MWC- Doogee S90 shown off

MWC Doogee S90 shown offJust before I left MWC I was able to see one last phone and this was one that I was particularly interested in. It is from a company called Doogee, which is a Chinese brand that has been specialising in making ruggedised phones. They have been doing this for a while and the S90 is their latest iteration of this line.

MWC Doogee S90 shown offThese phones are built to mean business, they are designed for those who don’t want to have to baby their phones, however, they still want a phone that will do all the things that they are used to doing. If you are the type of person who works in the outdoors or on a building site or you are incredibly clumsy then this is the line of phones for you. For me what makes the S90 particularly special is the sheers ruggedness of it. That, however, is not all as this phone is far from being a one trick pony. With the ability to add on modules this phone becomes something very different.MWC Doogee S90 shown off

Before we get into the modules and the specs of the phone I just wanted to say that this phone has been available for sale on Kickstarter for a while but that has now ended. It did, however, smash it Kickstarter funding as you can see below

DOOGEE’s S90 modular rugged smartphone smashes its Kickstarter target and is now available on Amazon and AliExpress

With over 900 backers, the DOOGEE S90 campaign has been a huge success

The DOOGEE S90, the first ever rugged modular smartphone which allows users to mix, match and swap parts, has concluded its Kickstarter campaign with a total of $354,412 raised across two months. 935 backers have researched into DOOGEE’s latest product and, so convinced by its offering, have spent their hard-earned cash to receive their own S90 at an exclusive price (£234.00).

Now that the campaign has come to an end, it doesn’t mean that the S90 is no longer available to purchase with the phone now available on Ali Express and Amazon (Links below release) as well as the DOOGEE website. People looking for the toughest phone on the market can buy on these three sites at an RRP of £389.99 for the phone alone and $509.99 to include all modules.

The S90 surpasses other phones on the market with its innovative modular design. Using magnetic force and 24 metal points to exchange data located on the rear of the phone, users can instantly turn the S90 into a powerful night vision camera. It also doubles as a professional rugged walkie-talkie with 400-480MHz wide range and long distance efficiency and a portable game console. In addition, the 5000mAh power bank module delivers an impressive 26 hours of usage

I was, unfortunately, unable to get hold of the phone via Kickstarter but I have been in discussion with Doogee and their partners in the UK and they have managed to secure my a review unit, which is great news. This is one of the reasons why I was so keen to check the phone out while I was in Barcelona. it was also one of the first opportunities for the journalist’s from all around the world to see the device in the flesh.

So what are the modules all about. MWC Doogee S90 shown off

We have sen modularity on phone before and it has been mainly utilised as a way of adding fun to phones at least this is the route that Motorola has gone down. Doogee have decided that they want to use Modularity to add functions to the phones. With this in mind they have developed 5 additional modules that will clip onto the back of the phone in the same way and style as on the the lastest Motorola devices.MWC Doogee S90 shown off

The modules are

Gamepad , Wireless Charger, Powerbank, Intercom and Night vision. In addition to this, I was also shown a 5G module that may or may not be available at the time of writing this article. The two modules that interested me the most were the Gamepad and the Powerbank one. The one that I would most likely use all the time would be the Wireless Charger module as it would mean I wouldn’t need to open the somewhat fiddly wireless charging flap on the underside of the phone.MWC Doogee S90 shown off

That about sums up my brief time with the Doogee S90. I hope to have my review unit shortly and then I can actually put it too the test and see if this modular approach will suit my style of working with a phone.

Until then if you are looking to buy one of these then check them out on Amazon or the Doogee website bear in mind that if you buy from the former you will not get all the modules you will onlyget the Powerbank.

DOOGEE introduces the S90 – the world’s toughest and first modular rugged smartphone

With night vision camera, 5,000 mAh Powerbank, digital walkie-talkie and professional gamepad modules, the S90 is DOOGEE’s most versatile, unbreakable smartphone

15th January 2019, London – Innovative technology company, DOOGEE Hengtong Technology Co. Ltd, is pleased to announce the launch of the latest rugged phone in its S-Series range, the DOOGEE S90. The S90 is the first ever rugged modular smartphone which allows users to mix, match and swap parts by sliding them into place using the magnetic metal point design. The S90 will be available at a discounted rate of $299 (£234 approx.) for the phone only or $399 (£312 approx.) (including night vision, battery and intercom modules) to backers on Kickstarter from 15th January until the 25th February and immediately after on the DOOGEE website for $499 (£390 approx.) or $676 (£530 approx.) including the modules.

In addition, the 5000mAh power bank module delivers an impressive 26 hours of usage.

Toughest smartphone inside and out

In addition to its new modular design innovation, S90 is the best rugged phone DOOGEE has produced to date. It is waterproof, dustproof and shockproof with IP68 protection and is fully functional when submerged in water up to 1.5m (5 feet) for two weeks. Thanks to its combination of metal and polycarbonate, the S90 can survive extreme temperatures, drops, transport shocks, humidity, mould, salt spray corrosion, explosive gas, vibration and much more. No matter where users take the S90, it can handle it.

Running on Android 8.1 Oreo system and driven by a balanced eight-core Helio P60 Octa-core chipset and Mali-G72 MP3 GPU, the S90 is up to 25% more energy efficient than previous models with a 30% CPU operating boost. The S90 is powered by a multi-core AI processing unit and NeuroPilot AI technology and can pick-up user behaviours, has facial recognition, fingerprint unlocking, scene identification as well as more advanced features. In addition, the S90 comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of built-in storage and a microSD card slot, allowing up to up to 256GB extra memory. This, together with the MaliG72 MP3 video adaptor, ensures the S90 functions smoothly during resource-intensive gaming or graphic applications.

The screen has an aspect ratio of 18:9 and 6.18’’ full HD+ display resolution of 2160×1080 pixels to produce a bright and contrasting picture. It also houses 16+8MP dual rear AI cameras, acting as a smart photographer, as it intelligently learns from facial recognition and scene identification in order to adjust light and tone. The device offers a multi-frame function, noise reduction, depth of field recognition and various filters to ensure the best photo possible is taken.

The 8MP SONY front camera with f/2.0 big aperture and 90°super wide-angle means every selfie captured is soft and flattering and AI-driven beauty function highlights the contours of the face to deliver the most attractive portrait.

The 5050mAh Polymer battery has a power saving system and has 675 hours standby time with the support of 10W wireless charging. The large battery capacity and rapid charging speed ensures you are never out of power for long.

DOOGEE is also developing a brand-new 5G module that can be applied to the S90 smartphone, making the network speed 10 times faster, which will be launched in Q3 of 2019.
