Qualcomm today named for the first time its next-generation mobile processor, the Snapdragon 855. The 855 includes the latest in terms of clock speeds, and will also be among the first CPUs to ship with native support for mobile 5G. Qualcomm is calling the Snapdragon 855 the first mobile platform to support multi-gigabit 5G, top-tier artificial intelligence, and deep augmented / virtual reality performance. According to Alex Katouzian, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Mobile, at Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 855 will provide a better on-device artificial intelligence experience thanks to the new, multi-core AI engine; the first Computer Vision image signal processor for advanced computational photography; and Snapdragon Elite Gaming, a new generation of experiences for gaming on mobile devices. The Snapdragon 855 will support the new Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor, an under-the-display ultrasonic fingerprint solution that can accurately detect fingerprints through multiple layers of display and protective glass, which will give phone designers more freedom when designing their mobile devices. Qualcomm will fully reveal all the Snapdragon 855’s capabilities at a keynote address at the Snapdragon Tech Summit on December 5.
