Sprint Details 5G Coverage, Launching Tomorrow

Sprint’s 5G network launches tomorrow in Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and Kansas City, as previously announced. In the coming weeks, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Phoenix, and Washington, DC will also gain 5G service. At that point, Sprint’s 5G network will cover a total of 2,180 square miles and 11.5 million people, the largest 5G coverage area in the US by far. Sprint is using the 2.5 GHz frequency band (band 41) for its initial 5G network, which offers much better coverage and building penetration than the mmWave frequencies that Verizon and AT&T have launched 5G with so far. Sprint also uses band 41 for LTE, and its new Massive MIMO antennas are delivering 4G LTE and 5G NR simultaneously in band 41, with similar coverage for each technology. Sprint’s 5G network in Dallas-Fort Worth covers approximately 575 square miles and 1.6 million people. In Houston, Sprint 5G covers approximately 165 square miles and 800,000 people. In Kansas City: 225 square miles and 625,000 people. In Atlanta: 150 square miles and 565,000 people. Sprint’s first 5G phone is the LG V50 ThinQ 5G, which goes on sale tomorrow in cities with Sprint 5G service. Sprint will offer the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G later this summer.

“No gun, no smoke, only speculation”, says Huawei

The continuing Trump Trade Termination is having a big impact on Huawei globally. Google won’t be able to provide an operating system, ARM won’t licence chip designs and several internal US-sourced components will stop arriving.

Huawei have today filed a motion for summary judgment to challenge the decision to block them, using the US courts to try and overturn the decision

No gun, no smoke, only speculation, says Huawei

Song Liuping, Huawei’s chief legal officer, told us that the blockade…

…will do nothing to make networks more secure. They provide a false sense of security, and distract attention from the real challenges we face. Politicians in the U.S. are using the strength of an entire nation to come after a private company. This is not normal. Almost never seen in history.

The U.S. government has provided no evidence to show that Huawei is a security threat. There is no gun, no smoke. Only speculation

Huawei argues that Section 889 of the 2019 NDAA only lists Huawei. It also stops US companies from awarding grants, contracts or loans to anyone buying Huawei equipment or services.

Song Liuping said the trade ban would also “directly harm” more than 1,200 American companies and affect jobs.

The Trade Termination is also having a direct impact on the Huawei sales in over 170 countries, with more than 3 billion consumers existing Huawei customers also affected.

MediaTek today announced its first SoC (system-on-chip) for flagship-class phones, which also includes 5G. The unnamed chip uses the new Cortex-A77 CPU and Mali-G77 GPU architectures announced by ARM earlier this week. The integrated, multi-mode Helio M70 modem supports 5G in the sub-6 GHz bands used today for 4G (not mmWave). It supports both TDD and FDD bands, dynamic spectrum sharing between 4G and 5G, and 2CC for using 2 5G bands simultaneously. It also includes MediaTek’s own AI processor technology. It uses the latest, most-efficient 7nm chip fabrication technology. The chip is capable of supporting advanced multimedia, including cameras up to 80 megapixels, and 4K video at 60 fps. Multiple phone makers have committed to using the chip in commercial phones, which are expected to ship in the 1st quarter of 2020.
